The Fourth International ITIS Network meeting will be held from 25-27 April 1997 in Marrakesh, Morocco. The meeting will be jointly organized by the International Irrigation Management Institute, Cemagref, the Ministère de l'Agriculture et de la Mise en Valeur Agricole of Morocco and Faculté des Sciences of the Cadi Ayyad University.
The objective of the ITIS meeting is to exchange experiences on the application of information techniques in irrigation systems and to obtain insights into the requirements for successful development and application of information techniques.
The theme of the Fourth Network Meeting will be Modern Techniques for Manual Operation of Irrigation Canals and the goal will be to discuss the latest improvement procedures regarding fully manually operated canal and partly automated canal.
The fourth ITIS meeting will take place after another international workshop to be held in Marrakesh during 22-24 April 1997 on The regulation of irrigation canals: State of the art of research and applications co-organized by the University of Marrakesh, Cemagref and LAAS-CNRS.
The theme of the fourth ITIS meeting was chosen to be consistent with that of the workshop with the goal of allowing some researchers and managers to participate actively in both meetings. The international workshop will concentrate more on control engineering whereas the ITIS meeting will be more focussed on practical improvements for manual operation.
Type of Contribution
The unique feature of the ITIS network meeting is to provide a forum for managers and researchers to share their own experiences and achievements in the management field. Contributions from researchers and managers, preferably on a joint basis, based on real life applications are called.
Topics
Improvement of manual canal operation is the theme of our fourth network meeting. Contributions are expected to address the issue with practical considerations, preferably, supported by some efficiency assessment (hydraulic, economic and sociological) as well.
Format
Submitted papers should be 8 pages long (including maps and figures) and should follow the proposed Grid presented in the Introduction Paper document.

What is ITIS?
In recent years, many computer-based models and tools have been developed to support irrigation managers in taking better decisions on issues related to irrigation management (operations, water scheduling, maintenance, etc.). Often, however, these models/tools are not targeted towards the needs of irrigation managers, while managers are not aware of recent developments in irrigation technology. This has led to a disappointingly low contribution of computer-based tools to irrigation management. With this in mind, the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) and the French Research Center for Agriculture and Environmental Engineering (Cemagref) launched a network that would bring together irrigation researchers and managers to work on generating and using better information for decisions making: Information Techniques for Irrigation Systems (ITIS). The ITIS Network has a light and flexible structure and consists of the following five elements:
