Babylonians were dependant heavily on agricultural staples barley and emmer for bread, and sesame for oil. Dates took place of most fruit and sugar. While the date palm logs were also used in building. Common vegetables included onions, garlic and marrows. Animals Barley straw, sesame cakes and other roughage was used as fodder for large and small cattle, goats, sheep for their milk, flesh, hides and wool. Meat was important in the diet so fowl and fish were important produce.

Because of the randomness of flooding from the Euphrates river Babylonian's were heavily dependant on irrigation for agriculture. Winter rains were scanty and when they do come pour down destructively. Very early, no later than 5000BC Babylonians began building barrages across small streams and deflector dams to catch flash floods. They developed an elaborate system of canals flanked by earthen dykes and put effort into maintaining canals.

A "Shaduf" used to move water from one irrigation channel to another.

Agricultural surpluses were used in trade for goods from other kingdoms.
